The Boeing 737 series of narrow-body jet airliners is the most popular in commercial aviation history. And among them, the Boeing 737-200 remains one of the most successful. Along with the -100 variant, it is a member of the Original Series of 737s, entering production at the aeronautic manufacturer’s facilities in Renton, Wash., in 1965. It enjoyed a 20-plus year production run, during which Boeing built 1,095 of them. This is a testament to this aircraft’s enduring reliability and cost-effectiveness. The 737-200 is basically a stretched version of the original 737-100 by 76 inches. This allowed it to hold up to 102 passengers in a standard two-class arrangement. In a single-class setting, it can hold as many as 115 passengers. Designed as a short- to medium-range, small-capacity airliner, the Boeing 737-200 features a pair of Pratt & Whitney Canada JT8D series turbofan engines. Despite its reputation as an economical operator, it boasts some respectable performance capabilities, including:

• Cruising speed: 494 mph
• Service ceiling: 37,000 feet
• Minimum takeoff distance: 6,099 feet (at MTOW)

Dedicated and Convertible Cargo Options

To cater to as broad a market as possible, Boeing later produced modified versions of the 737-200, including a dedicated cargo airliner (737-200C) that featured:

• Freight door behind the cockpit
• Reinforced floor with rollers

They also offered convertible ‘Quick Change’ (737-200QC) model, which could be swapped back and forth between freight and passenger arrangements. And given the 737’s short runway performance, Boeing saw fit to introduce a ‘gravel kit,’ which would enable it to operate in and out of remote areas with unpaved runways. Many are still in operation today by cargo companies in northern Canada. Boeing unveiled a further improvement of the 737-200 in the early 1970s, dubbed the 737-200 Advanced. It featured:

• Increased fuel capacity
• Better range
• Larger payload

Due to increasing airport noise restrictions, many Boeing 737-200s have been retrofitted with Stage 3 hush kits.
