Ogallala was a stop along the Oregon Trail and several forts were established to aid those heading west. Years later, the Union Pacific Railroad was erected in much the same place as those original forts. By 1867, Ogallala was fully established with stores fronting the railroad tracks, a general store had opened its doors to locals and visitors, and hotels and saloons were popping up.
From 1870 to 1885, Ogallala, Nebraska was considered the “Gateway of the Northern Plains.” Just like a scene from a western classic movie, cattlemen and cowboys would come to Ogallala’s hotel and saloons to bargain over the price of cattle. As deals were made and hands were shook, gold pieces were exchanged while liquor flowed smoothly.
When you fly into the jet charter airport in Ogallala, you’ll soon discover that this area is absolutely rife with things to do. From visiting the historic Haythorn Ranch and the Clear Creek Waterfowl Management Area to dining at Ole’s Big Game Steakhouse & Lounge and touring the Little Catholic-Protest Church at Keystone, your itinerary during your stay will be full.
If you’re in the area during the end of July, plan to visit Lake McConaughy, Nebraska’s largest lake, for the annual Kites and Castles event. The event features epic sand sculptures, access to miles of white-sand beaches, and a chance to mingle with locals.
At the end of the day, mosey over to the Front Street Steakhouse. This fine dining establishment is located in a replica Old West town, complete with a jailhouse.
