If you ever find yourself on historical Route 66, make sure to stop in Afton, Oklahoma.
Cruise down one of the two stretches of the original Route 66, only nine feet wide. The Ribbon Road is a historic section as it’s the only remaining segment of Route 66’s narrow beginnings.
For the street rod or custom car enthusiasts, the jet charter airport in Afton takes you right to where you want to be: Darryl Starbird’s National Rod & Custom Car Hall of Fame Museum. Take you time and wander through the 50-car display of exotic vehicles.
Nearby Grand Lake is a great place to stop for a quick dip, a leisurely picnic or gravity-defying parasailing. An extensive 1,300 miles of shoreline wraps around the 46,500-acre lake. Two miles of that shoreline belong to the Cherokee Spur Ranch where visitors can partake in a variety of guided hunts. Duck, pheasant, and quail hunts are all available through the ranch, which also offers overnight accommodation to its guests.
Fall is beautiful in Oklahoma, and is also the best time to visit Gibson’s Farm and Produce. This classic Afton destination provides family-friendly entertainment including pumpkin picking, a windy hay maze, and friendly farm animals.
Don’t let the unusual names of Ugly’s Grill and Bar or Nowhere on Route 66 Barbeque fool you. Two of Afton’s best eateries serve up delicious shrimp boils and tantalizing barbeque, respectively.
