Once called Frazer, Altus was renamed after a flash flood that forced the residents to move to higher ground. Thus Altus, or the “High Place,” was created. Since then the city has grown and loves to welcome visitors from all over the world.
A jet charter airport in Altus takes visitors to the breathtaking home of Lake Altus-Lugert. The lake feeds off of the Red River, offering plenty of recreational activities and natural beauty. Hikers will enjoy the rugged granite hills that surround the area while hunters will appreciate the 3,600 acres of public hunting area at the north end of the lake.
Nearby Quartz Mountain has numerous campsites and cabins for rent. Baldy Point climbing area will call to rock climbers and rappelers looking to explore the jagged mountain faces. For those that prefer to stay on flat land, there are hiking and biking trails, a nearby amusement park, and water recreation activities.
The Altus City Reservoir also offers fun for visitors of any age. Make sure to bring your fishing pole to the reservoir as there are channel catfish and largemouth bass aplenty! With year-round fishing available, even the most inexperienced angler will have plenty of opportunities to catch a fish.
Altus is home to restaurants offering all types of cuisine. Wander through the town’s boutiques and find something special to bring home. The Cotton Patch always has thoughtful gifts available. The Whirlwind Book Bar is always welcoming; the tall ceilings create an airy, inviting environment where readers can get lost in literary fantasies while munching on a cupcake from the in-store bakery.
