Situated halfway between Denver and Dallas lies Dumas, a city in Moore County with great expectations. This larger-than-life Texas gem was named after Louis Dumas, the president of the Panhandle Townsite Company, purchaser of the railroad survey lands in the Texas Panhandle. Throughout the last several decades, the population has fluctuated from nearly none to what it is today. Roughly 15,000 people call Dumas home today, but it’s always open for welcoming visitors to the area.
History buffs can search the town of Dumas for plaques dotted around the city giving little bits of insight into the history of the Moore County area. If you start your historical scavenger hunt at Window on the Plains Museum, you’ll find yourself making your way from there to the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center and all along State Highway 152.
Visitors with children in tow should spend a day at the Dumas Aquatic Center to beat back the heat Texas is known for. Here you’ll find a multi-million dollar park that features two large water slides, a pool, and a children’s play area. There’s also a playground, skateboard park and aquatic park at McDade Park, plus a half-mile walking/running track, covered pavilions, and more. For a little indoor family fun, the Dumas Family Fun Center is home to a bowling all and mini golf course.
Kid-free travelers or visitors with older children may want to book a tee time at the Pheasant Trails Golf Course, an 18-hole course with fabulous greens.
There are also plenty of historical sites to visit when you fly into the jet charter airport in Dundas, like the Alibates Flint Quarry National Monument, Evelyn Theater and Palo Duro Canyon State Park.
