Investigations Begin Concerning Boeing Dreamliner’s Batteries
With three years in delays, more than a billion dollars budget overrun, and battery issues, Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner debut was not the smoothest one. On January 16, two major Japanese airlines, All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL), grounded their 787 Dreamliners due to an emergency landing of one of the planes in Takamatsu, Japan. During ANA’s flight, NH 692, pilots detected smoke and an error message in the cockpit and had to make an emergency landing. As a result, ANA evacuated 129 passengers and 8 crewmembers.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner
787 Dreamliner is an airplane of the next generation. Being a long-range, mid-size, wide-body twin-engine jet airliner, Boeing 787 Dreamliner is lighter and 20% more fuel efficient than other aircraft of similar size. Fifty Percent of its primary structure and airframe is made up of composite materials like carbon fiber reinforced plastic and others. The 787-8 Dreamliner can carry 210-250 passengers and 787-9 Dreamliner can carry 250-290 passengers. It is a more modern, functional and efficient aircraft due to new technologies like an interior environment with higher humidity for passenger comfort.
Investigation
After battery incident in Japan, Federal Aviation Administration issued an emergency directive (AD) to address all the issues regarding the Boeing 787. According to FAA, operations will be resumed once Boeing proves that the batteries are risk free. “Boeing is committed to supporting the FAA and finding answers as quickly as possible. The company is working around the clock with its customers and various regulatory and investigative authorities. We will make available the entire resources of The Boeing Company to assist,†says Boeing President and CEO Jim McNerney commented.
