NATIONAL AIRSPACE SYSTEMS
The National Airspace System (NAS) is comprised of a network of airspace, navigational service facilities, private jet airports, personnel, and equipment used to coordinate and control civilian aviation within the United States. The NAS is governed by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, policies and procedures.
The NextGen of air travel
With collaboration from air industry partners, the FAA established the Next Generation Air Transportation System as a way to modernize and improve the daily operations, enhance safety and improve efficiency of the National Airspace System. Scheduled to be implemented across the United States from 2012 to 2025, NextGen is a comprehensive suite of state-of-the-art technologies that allow aircraft to move more safely and efficiently from private jet airports to their destination.
Some of the benefits of NextGen include:
• Air traffic controllers have better tools to help them safely and efficiently track and separate aircraft. • Pilots have access to more information in the cockpits • Airlines fly more efficient routes so that passengers can reach their destinations on time, while lessening fuel burn and other environmental impacts. With NextGen, weather-related incidents can be reduced through the use of improved sharing systems, new technology, and increased weather awareness. • The FAA can develop stronger partnerships with the aviation community
