Experience the Metlakatla way of life in Alaska’s only reserve. The Metlakatla community, established in 1887, is located on the western shores of the Annette Islands located off the coast of British Columbia, Canada.
The breathtaking community sits in a lush temperate rainforest and embraces a rich culture and traditions that date back thousands of years. In the local Tsimshian language, Maxłaxaała or Metlakatla means the “peaceful saltwater passage where the wind dies down.” Travel inland from Metlakatla for the undisturbed nature that covers the Annette Islands.
In addition to abundant fishing, the region relies on tourism for its economy. And, as such, the Metlakatla embraces tourists looking to experience the beauty of the island and the complex Tsimshian culture. Metlakatla is the only place in the United States to experience Tsimshian culture. Please note that visitors planning to stay for more than 24 hours have to apply for a travel permit ahead of time through the Metlakatla Indian Reserve.
For dining on the island, you’ll find multiple local favorites like the Hungry Raven, Munchies or the new Shadow Mountain Coffee Stand.
When you hire a private jet and fly into a private jet charter airport in Tamgas Harbor, Alaska, you’ll land at the Tamgas Harbor Airport. Owned by the Council of Annette, this small airport is the main access point for the island and welcomes everything from small seaplanes to the four-seater Eclipse 500, to the 13-seat Gulfstream GIV-SP.
