Tucked in the Short Creek valley lies a little city with a big history. Colorado City nearly straddles the border between Arizona and Utah, though it actually belongs to the state of Arizona in Mohave Country. On the other side of the border lies Hildale, Utah, and together the two cities comprise what’s commonly referred to as the community of Short Creek.
For generations, this sun-drenched valley has been a refuge for people who practice polygamy. Under the rule of Warren Jeffs, the valley residents were extremely close and didn’t venture outside of the walls erected to keep visitors out. Upon his arrest, the community changed drastically.
The once isolated community is now a popular destination for sun seekers, wine lovers, and travelers of all kinds. Of course, those with a fascination of the polygamist lifestyle and the history of Colorado City are among visitors to the area, but there are several new developments taking place to attract more visitors, like a winery, a 15-cabin resort and more.
The jet charter airport in Colorado City has current expansion plans to make the area even more accessible to travelers looking to experience the beauty of the desert. The airport is located less than 3 miles from the central business center of Colorado City and has two runways available for private aviation use.
