When pastor Seth Noble set out from Boston towards what is now called Bangor, he originally intended on naming the settlement Sunbury. However, when it came time to pick the name, his favorite Irish hymn entitled, “Bangor” stood out too much to be ignored.
Sprawled across the shores of the Penobscot River, Bangor serves as a major Maine hub. Over the years, it’s become the largest center of service and retail businesses in the region. It’s also a major hub for government, employment, and education.
Golf enthusiasts will love the Bangor Municipal Golf Course, a 27-hole Championship course. The entire course was designed by Geoffrey Cornish, a prominent golf course architect that designed more than 200 courses throughout his lengthy career.
Those looking to unplug and connect with nature will appreciate the Rolland F. Perry City Forest. This massive green space encompasses 680 acres of rolling flora and fauna, 9 miles of trails, and an absolutely stunning boardwalk. When you fly to the jet charter airport in Bangor, you’ll be able to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the sprawling park.
Bangor is also home to the Bangor Opera House, a guided Stephen King tour, including the haunted water tower featured in It, the First Friday Art Walk, boutiques, cafes, five-star restaurants and so much more.
