Soar into one of the most unique cities in Michigan when you book a flight to the jet charter airport in Hancock. This city serves as a gateway to the stunning Keweenaw Peninsula on Lake Superior. And yes, Hancock was named after the John Hancock, signer of the Declaration of Independence. However, Hancock was ultimately founded by Quincy Mining Company in 1859, during the copper mining boom that took this region by storm.
The Quincy Mine ceased production in the 1940s, but it enjoyed a respectable 83-year run, paying stockholders millions of dollars in dividends. One of the most impressive feats of this massive copper mine was that it held the title for world’s longest mine shaft. The Quincy Number 2 shaft stretched 1.75 miles at a 55 degree decline and required the world’s largest steam-driven hoist to lower and raise workers throughout the shaft. Visitors are able to see this impressive piece of history year round.
During the winter tourist season, the Mont Ripley Ski Area attracts winter enthusiasts from all over the continent. It features 440 foot vertical drop with six different runs, 22 trails of skiable terrain, 33 terrain park features, including jumps, and 3 lanes for tubing at the tube park.
