Located in Dickson County, Michigan, Iron Mountain was incorporated as a village in 1887. Two years later, it reached city status. The area was known for its iron ore and underground mining was prominent throughout the county. However, by the 1980s, mining operations came to a halt and logging, winter sports and tourism quickly filled the economic void, keeping Iron Mountain rooted in place.
For history buffs and mining enthusiasts, the Iron Mountain Iron Mine has been designated as a historical landmark and is still open to the public for guided tours. Visitors can plunge nearly 400 feet underground. WWII Glider and Military Museum is another stop to add to your itinerary. Here you can take a step back in time and explore an extensive military uniform collection, a fully restored CG-4A World War II glider, and much more.
Those looking to connect with nature can head over to the Pine Mountain Ski & Golf Resort. Located less than three miles from the jet charter airport in Iron Mountain, the resort features top-rated ski runs, an award-winning 18 hole championship golf course, tastefully appointed condos, access to a stunning veterans memorial, and so much more.
