As home to our Nation’s Congress, Washington D.C. is a frequent private jet destination for politicians, lobbyists, business executives and government officials. New York City, a hotbed of political activity, is another major private jet destination for politicians and activists, especially during election campaigns. Frequently, politicians and officials find themselves in need of a convenient and reliable jet charter service from New York City to the Washington D.C. area.

For corporate charter flights from New York to Washington, D.C., there are two major airports in the D.C. area that are accessible by corporate jet aircraft: Washington Dulles International (FAA ID: KIAD) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA). Washington Dulles is located in Chantilly, VA, 35 miles from the city. Ronald Reagan Airport is a more convenient option because it’s located just three miles from the capital’s business district. Unfortunately, the Ronald Reagan DCA airport is also the hardest airport to gain entry to because of its proximity to the city center.

In previous years, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has restricted charter jet access to Ronald Reagan DCA for security reasons. Currently, TSA mandates that all private jet flights to DCA must first pass TSA screening at select airports, known as gateway airports, prior to landing at Ronald Reagan Airport. Until recently, the only gateway airports in the New York area were Teterboro Airport (KTEB) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (KJFK). This means that private jet flights to Washington, D.C. from non-gateway airports such as White Plains (KHPN) or LaGuardia (KLGA) are required to utilize Washington Dulles Airport.

The DASSP program was established by TSA to grant more charter aircraft access to the Ronald Reagan Airport. UPDATE: As of Feb. 1, 2017, the following New York-area airports currently have status as gateway airports for Ronald Reagan DCA:

  • Republic Airport (KRFG), Farmingdale
  • West Chester County Airport (KHPN), Westchester
  • Long Island MacArthur Airport (KISP), Islip
  • LaGuardia (KLGA), New York
