History

In 2011, Boeing was looking to replace the iconic 747 Jumbo Jet. Although still a popular airliner, the 747’s engineering dates back to the 1970s. Rather than add a new variant to the existing 747 line, Boeing designed the new 777X series from the ground up.

Range

One of the 747 Jumbo’s selling points was its 8,350-mile range. New technologies allow Boeing to break that range barrier. Both variants in the 777X commercial line can fly further: the 777-8 is capable of 13,400 miles, and its cousin, the 777-9, can travel 12,700 miles. Boeing uses the powerful new General Electric GE9X engines, made with an advanced ceramic-matrix composite. These GE engines have better noise and emission reduction and are 5% more fuel-efficient than previous engines.
