It all started back in 1972 when two men came together and formed the Woodstock Iron Company. The pair purchased 2,000 acres in Alabama, built Furnace #1, sought to create the perfect town, which they dubbed, “The Model City.” Located in a tree-lined valley of the Appalachian foothills lies Anniston, a small southern town with a welcoming attitude and winner of the prestigious All American City Award in 1978.
When you fly to the jet charter airport in Anniston, you can take your pick from numerous adventures and attractions to help pass the time during your stay. The Anniston Museum of Natural History features life-sized dinosaurs, an in-depth exhibit about the local environment, a hands-on exhibit that demonstrates some of the most forceful weather events in the world and much more.
The Berman Museum is home to some seriously enthralling artifacts and exhibits from years gone by. Here you’ll discover weapons from the American Civil War, personal items from Napoleon Bonaparte, Mussolini and Catherine the Great, a pot created more than 4,000 years ago, and even Hitler’s tea set. There’s also a temporary gallery that changes on a regular basis and can tickle the fancies of even the most cultured minds.
Some of the previous exhibits, however, included:
- Women in War
- The Sacred Art of Buddhism
- Snapshots of D-Day
- The Art of Emperors: Cloisonne and Enamelwork
For a more relaxing day, visit the Longleaf Botanical Gardens. Among the 135 acres of pristinely manicured gardens you’ll find native plants, tropical palms, fruit trees and more.
