Initially founded as a telegraph station, Tanacross is now home to a small number of residents.
An airfield was added to the village in the 1930s, which was later used by the military. Tanacross welcomed thousands of troops to the area in the early 1940s and housed them in temporary camps prior to their deployment.
In 1972 the village relocated across the Tanana River bank to its current location on the south bank. Tanacross is less than 13 miles from Tok, Alaska, which is the first community after crossing the Canadian-Alaskan border.
There is an abundance of wildlife in the Tanacross area. As part of the main migration corridor for waterfowl, there are often trumpeter swans, pintails, green-winged teals, and more to be seen. Larger animals roam the area too; keep an eye out for moose, bears and caribou.
