What is now known as Danville was first founded in 1827. The first post office was established that same year with other shops, schools, and churches following shortly after. Later, during the 19th and 20th centuries, Danville evolved into a major industrial city, supplying nearby communities with coal.
This rich historical past has left behind some extremely beautiful buildings that still stand in Danville today. The downtown area is dotted with preserved and restored historical buildings worth a second look. Constructed in 1855, Fithian House is worth a visit, so is the Vermillion County War Museum and the Fischer Theater.
During the 1970s, many parcels of former mining land were purchased to build a reservoir on the nearby Vermillion River, but that project was ultimately abandoned and the land was converted into parks and recreation areas that allow locals and visitors to explore the surrounding area via foot, bike, and boat.
