When business takes you to south-west Oklahoma, the jet charter airport at Lawton-Fort Sill is an excellent starting point.
Prior to1950, the airfield was primarily used for military training. Nearby Fort Sill is considered the “birthplace” of American combat aviation. In 1915, the 1st Aero Squadron un-crated, assembled and flew the first US combat aircraft. The flimsy aircraft were immensely dangerous, but the Fort persevered as an aerial and artillery training facility.
As the 1950s post-war economy boomed, the need for a commercial airport became apparent. The commercial airport opened in 1950, and according to one local report, “brought the world to Lawton’s doorstep.”
Fort Sill is still the area’s largest employer, but other facilities such as the Goodyear Tire Company and the Cameron University have diversified the local economy. Lawton’s population was estimated at 93,000 in 2019, making it the 5th-largest city in the state.
Lawton-Fort Sill airport features an 8,600-foot runway, perfect for anything up to a heavy private charter jet. The LaSill Fixed Base Operator terminal can provide all the aircraft services you may need, including maintenance and refueling. The FBO team is service oriented, and can assist you with car and hotel reservations, and any questions you may have about the Lawton area and historic Fort Sill.
