When you fly to a jet charter airport in Wink, Texas, you’re centrally located and ready for your trip to the Hendrick Oilfield.
Located in central Winkler County near Wink, the Hendrick Oilfield dates back to 1926 when it was discovered by random drilling. The discovery well led to only 400 barrels of oil at 2,524 feet, but the operators, determined to find more, continued drilling. At 3,006 feet, the operators found a large deposit of crude oil and pumped 120 barrels per day.
The well was sold to the Southern Crude Oil Purchasing Company later that same year. By December, the new owners had reached even further to 3,052 feet and increased production to 390 barrels per day.
As the field continued to gain interest from other companies, oil production at Hendrick was ramped up. In the 1950s, the field produced roughly one million barrels per year before dropping to half that in the ‘60s and ‘70s.
Over six decades of production, the field saw more than 260,000,000 barrels filled, making Hendrick Oilfield one of the largest fields in the state.
Wink’s growth was amplified by the success of the oilfield with the city seeing a boom throughout the 1900s. Today, the city is home to just under 1,000 people.
