Viking / De Havilland Twin Otter DHC-6
The De Havilland DHC-6 is such an iconic aircraft that flying in one is almost a rite of passage. It’s not exactly glamorous, but it is definitely solid, reliable and versatile. It has earned its bragging rights. This robust 19-seater has proven its worth around the world, whether flying missions in the extreme heat of the Sahara or re-supplying Antarctic research stations.
The DHC-6 Twin Otter was first developed in 1965 as a Short Take-Off & Landing (STOL) commuter aircraft. The high wings, twin turbine engines and fixed tricycle landing gear made it ideal for flying passengers and cargo to remote locations.
De Havilland continued improving the aircraft throughout the following decades until production ceased in 1988. The production rights were purchased by Viking Air, which began producing the Twin Otter 400 series in 2007.
Though the aircraft’s general appearance hasn’t changed much since inception, the modern 400 series has superior avionics, improved electrical systems, and 21st-century composite materials for structural strength.
The typical commuter configuration can carry up to 19 passengers 892 miles. (775 nautical miles) There is also an 8-passenger Executive Seating variant, with additional legroom, fold-out tables, and face-to-face leather chairs.
The landing gear can also be configured for skis, seaplane or amphibious use. It’s the perfect aircraft for island-hopping charters, flying to a remote fishing resort getaway, or exploring potential factory sites by air. The DeHavilland DHC-6 is rugged enough and versatile enough to handle any mission you ask of it.
