It would be remiss to visit Alexandria without seeing some of its historic sites and attractions. Located in the country just outside of Alexandria is the Mount Vernon Estate, the family plantation of George Washington, where the first US president lived with his wife Martha. Visitors can take a guided
tour of the estate and walk in Washington’s footsteps. Lined with boutiques and specialty shops, King Street is where you can also visit the Gadsby's Tavern, where the founding fathers once dined. It is now a museum featuring old photographs and artifacts. Those familiar with the PBS TV show Mercy Street will want to check out the restored mansion, former hospital and gardens of Carlyle House Historic Park, which was the inspiration for the Civil War set series. The only glitch was the catering from New Orleans to Las Vegas. I don't know how you could correct the issue, but we didn't receive exactly what we ordered -- plus, they did not provide us with utensils, plates and napkins.
